What creators call an Instagram shadowban is, in Instagram’s terms, content or an account that is not eligible to be recommended to people who do not follow you. You can check it yourself in Account Status, which shows whether your content is eligible for recommendations and which posts or profile details are the problem. The fix is to edit or remove what Instagram flags, or ask for a review, not to follow hashtag lists or wait out a fixed number of days.

What Instagram calls it: recommendation eligibility

Your followers can still see everything you post. What changes is reach to non-followers: Explore, Reels, Feed recommendations and suggestions. Instagram’s Recommendations Guidelines are stricter than its Community Guidelines, so a post can stay up and still not be recommended. That is the gap creators experience as a shadowban. For a creator who also has a paid page, it usually comes from suggestive content or from the profile itself, not from the link alone (see can you put an OnlyFans link in your Instagram bio).

How to check Account Status, step by step

  1. Switch to a professional (creator or business) account if you have not. TechCrunch reported in December 2022 that recommendation eligibility in Account Status was launched for professional accounts.
  2. Open your profile and tap the menu in the top corner.
  3. Go to Settings and look for Account Status (in recent versions under the account section; menu labels move between app versions, so typing “Account Status” into the Settings search is the quickest way).
  4. Read each section: removed content, features you cannot use, and whether your content can be recommended to non-followers.
  5. If recommendations are affected, open the details. Instagram shows samples of posts or profile parts (such as the bio or profile photo) that go against its Recommendations Guidelines.
  6. Edit or delete those items, or use the option to disagree so Instagram reviews the decision again.

We could not open Instagram’s own help article on Account Status today, so the menu path above is a general description checked against TechCrunch’s report; the exact labels on your phone may differ.

What makes content non-recommendable (Meta’s own list)

Instagram’s help page on recommendations (read 2 October 2026) lists content it does not recommend to non-followers. The items most relevant to creators:

It also does not recommend accounts that “Repeatedly and/or recently shared content we try not to recommend in the account name, username, profile photo, bio or profile.” In plain terms: a suggestive bio or profile photo can make the whole account ineligible, even if most posts are fine.

Fixes that work and myths that waste time

Works Does not work
Removing or editing the posts Account Status flagsLists of banned or “safe” hashtags with no source
Rewriting a suggestive bio and changing the profile photoA fixed waiting period (“shadowbans last 14 days”), which Instagram does not publish
Asking for a review when you think Instagram is wrongMasking or redirecting your link, which Meta’s spam policy prohibits as cloaking
Posting work that is plainly fine to recommend: face, personality, styling, fitness, behind the scenesA spare account to replace the main one, which Meta disables as evasion
Checking Account Status after every changeBuying followers or engagement, which does not bring paying fans

Recommendations are also uneven. Two creators posting similar work can get different results, and a review can take time. Accept that, keep to the rules, and do not build your income on one recommendation system. The rules on what gets removed, rather than just hidden, are in how to promote on Instagram without getting banned. If Instagram limits the account because of your audience’s age, that is a separate mechanism, explained in Instagram’s 18+ restrictions for creators.

Traffic that does not depend on one app

Recommendations bring new people. Income comes from people who already know you. Three things protect that income when reach drops:

Tracked links on HerFans report clicks, sign-ups and money for each place you post, so you can see what a drop in Instagram reach actually costs you. HerFans is for women creators 18 and over, every creator’s identity is approved before her profile is public, and the fee is a flat 20% of every sale. Frequently asked questions

Does Instagram shadowban creators?
Instagram does not use the word, but it does make content and accounts ineligible to be recommended to non-followers. Your followers still see your posts; Explore, Reels and suggestions do not show them to new people. You can check this in Account Status.
How do I check if I am shadowbanned on Instagram?
On a professional account, open Settings, find Account Status, and look at whether your content can be recommended. Instagram shows samples of the posts or profile details that are the problem.
How long does an Instagram shadowban last?
Instagram does not publish a fixed period. Eligibility comes back when the flagged content is edited or removed, or when a review decides in your favor.
Can my bio cause a shadowban?
Yes. Instagram says it does not recommend accounts that repeatedly or recently shared non-recommendable content in the account name, username, profile photo, bio or profile.
Do hashtag lists help?
No. Meta publishes no list of safe or banned hashtags for creators, and what decides recommendations is the content and the profile.
