Age limits on Instagram

Instagram’s 18+ Restrictions for Creators and What the Age Limits Mean for You

Since October 2025, Instagram keeps accounts of users under 18 away from accounts whose content or bio is not suitable for them. For an adult creator, that matches the goal.

Since October 2025, Instagram stops accounts of users under 18 from following, finding or messaging accounts that regularly share content not suitable for them, or whose name or bio suggests the account is not suitable for them. A creator with an adult subscription link in her bio can fall into that group, which means her account is limited to adults. That is consistent with what an adult creator wants anyway: an audience of adults.

What Meta changed in October 2025

On 14 October 2025 Meta announced new default content settings for Instagram accounts of users under 18. Its announcement said those accounts would no longer be able to follow accounts that “regularly share age-inappropriate content,” or accounts whose “name or bio suggests the account is inappropriate” for them. Where such a follow already exists, the user under 18 can no longer see or interact with that account’s content, send it messages, or see its comments under other posts. Instagram also stops recommending those accounts to users under 18 and makes them hard to find in search. It works both ways: those accounts cannot follow, message or comment on accounts of users under 18.

Meta’s Transparency Center page on age-appropriate content (updated May 13, 2026) describes the same aim, to prevent users under 18 “from discovering, following and interacting with accounts that primarily share content that’s not age-appropriate.” The default setting hides, among other things, “near nudity such as nudity covered by digital overlay,” photos “zoomed in on someone’s buttocks,” and “sexually suggestive language describing sexual encounters, including the use of sexual metaphors.”

How your bio affects who can follow you

Meta’s announcement does not list which bios count. ABC News, reporting on the change on 15 October 2025, gave “a link to an OnlyFans account” as an example. That fits Meta’s Community Standards, which already limit “usernames, links to or logos of Adult Subscription Websites” to viewers 18 and older (Adult Sexual Solicitation policy, Last Updated May 14, 2025). So an adult subscription link in the bio can place the whole account in the restricted group, not only individual posts.

For the rules on the link itself, read can you put an OnlyFans link in your Instagram bio.

What it does to reach among adults

These limits concern users under 18. Meta has not said they reduce reach among adults, and we could not find an official statement either way. Reach among adults is governed by the separate recommendation rules: Instagram does not recommend near nudity or suggestive content to non-followers, and it also looks at the bio and profile when deciding whether to recommend an account. If your reach dropped, check that first; see Instagram shadowban for creators.

Why this is consistent with your goal

An adult creator’s paying audience is adults, and every serious platform for adult creators requires its fans and creators to be adults. A rule that keeps users under 18 away from your account protects them and protects you: fewer messages and follows from accounts you should not be talking to, and a cleaner record if your account is ever reviewed. There is nothing to work around here, and nobody should try.

Settings to check

We could not verify an Instagram setting that lets a creator limit her whole account to adults herself. Meta applies the limits based on content and profile, so what you control is what you post and how you describe it.

Building an adult audience

On HerFans, creators must be women 18 and over and pass identity verification before they publish or are paid: a government issued ID and a live camera check on the creator’s own phone, decided by a person, with a date of birth under 18 refused on the spot. Records are kept under 18 U.S.C. 2257; our age verification policy explains the rest. Fans can follow for free, and the fee is a flat 20% of every sale. Frequently asked questions

What are Instagram’s 18+ restrictions for creators?
Since October 2025, Instagram stops accounts of users under 18 from following, finding or messaging accounts that regularly share content not suitable for them or whose name or bio suggests so. For an adult creator, this means the account is limited to adults.
Does an OnlyFans link in my bio trigger these limits?
It can. Meta does not list which bios count, but ABC News gave a link to an OnlyFans account as an example, and Meta already limits links to adult subscription websites to viewers 18 and older.
Do the age limits reduce my reach among adults?
Meta has not said so. Reach among adults depends on the separate recommendation rules, which you can check in Account Status.
Can I turn these limits off?
No, and there is no reason to try. They protect users under 18, and an adult creator’s audience is adults.
How does HerFans check age?
Creators submit a government issued ID, front and back, and a live camera check on their own phone. A person decides every submission, and a date of birth under 18 is refused on the spot.
