Creator verification checks two things before you can publish or be paid: that you are at least 18, using a current government issued photo ID, and that the person holding that ID is you, using photos or a live camera check. US law (18 U.S.C. 2257) requires producers of explicit material to check each performer’s name and date of birth against an ID and keep records, card networks require age and identity checks for adult content sites, and platforms build their process around both.
This page explains the process in general and on HerFans. For OnlyFans specifics (its tax form and step by step screens), read how to get verified on OnlyFans. Nothing here is legal advice.
A government issued photo ID that is current and shows your legal name and date of birth: usually a passport, a national identity card or a driver’s license. The law behind this is specific: 18 U.S.C. 2257 requires a producer to “ascertain, by examination of an identification document containing such information, the performer’s name and date of birth”, and to record any other name the performer has used, including stage names.
A side by side table of what each platform checks is on creator platform age requirements.
A photo of an ID proves that an ID exists. It does not prove that the person sending it is the person on it. That is what the face check is for: a selfie, a short video or a live capture, compared with the photo on the document. A live check also makes it much harder to use a printed or saved picture of somebody else.
On HerFans, the ID photos and the live camera check happen in the same session on the creator’s own phone. If something is clearly wrong while you take the photos, follow the instruction on screen and take them again.
An automated check reads the material and writes down what it found, such as the date of birth and whether the face matches. It approves nothing. Every submission is decided by a person, and a date of birth under 18 is refused on the spot. Until identity is approved, the creator’s profile is not visible to the public and she cannot be paid. We chose this because a wrong approval is the one mistake a platform cannot undo.
Most platforms do not publish an official verification time in their terms. Third party guides often quote 24 to 72 hours for the large platforms, but we could not confirm that on an official page, so treat it as an estimate. HerFans does not give a fixed time: a person reviews every submission.
Identity records for adult content platforms are kept because the law requires them, not for marketing. Fanvue says document data “are stored per USC 2257 requirements”. HerFans keeps records under 18 U.S.C. 2257; our 2257 statement and age verification policy explain what is kept.
Verification also comes back later. OnlyFans can ask you to “Submit additional age or identity verification information any time we ask for it”, and payouts are checked against the verified name, which is why you need your own bank account.
Every person who appears in content needs to be verified too. OnlyFans requires proof of identity and written, informed consent from each person who is not a tagged creator. On HerFans, anyone else appearing in content needs their own verification and a signed consent and release before the post is published.
The age rules themselves are on minimum age to sell photos online and can you start an OnlyFans at 18, and anyone under 18 should read why no platform can accept you. For what comes after approval, see the first time creator guide. HerFans is for women creators 18 and over. Create your free page and start verification, or read more for creators.

ID photos, front and back, and a live camera check are taken together, so nobody else can complete them for you.
The automated check only notes what it found; approval is always a person’s decision.

Fans subscribe, tip and unlock your content. You ask for a payout from your dashboard once your available balance reaches the published minimum. Each sale is pending for 30 days, the period in which refunds and most card disputes arrive, and 10% of it is held as a reserve until day 120. For a sale paid by card, the reserve is held longer, up to day 206, because our card processor keeps its own reserve on that payment for 26 weeks and it is released to you once it has been returned to us.
