If you want to sell explicit photos or video of yourself, SubscribeStar is the wrong home, and the reason is in its own terms. SubscribeStar.adult states that all sexually explicit images and video on it are made with 2D and 3D art and animation software and involve no real life models. The alternatives built for real adult creators are OnlyFans, Fansly, Fanvue and HerFans, which pays 80% on subscriptions, pay-per-view, tips and paid messages.
We run HerFans, so weigh this page with that in mind. Every SubscribeStar figure below comes from its own pricing page, payouts policy, help center and terms as they read in September 2026. Where SubscribeStar is the better deal, we say so, and for one kind of creator it plainly is.
SubscribeStar is a US membership platform run by Starcling, LLC, and it has two faces. The main site takes creators of every kind. The adult side, SubscribeStar.adult, now brands itself as SubscribeStar.art and calls itself the number one monetization platform for NSFW digital artists. Its record-keeping statement under 18 U.S.C. 2257 explains why it can say that: the platform is exempt from the federal age-record rules because its explicit material is drawn or rendered, not filmed.
That is a sensible business for illustrators, 3D animators and adult game studios, and a closed door for a woman whose product is herself. A platform that is exempt from 2257 has no system for collecting and keeping the age and identity records that real explicit content needs. So if your plan was a Patreon-style page for your own photo sets and clips, the choice is not between SubscribeStar and something else. It is between the platforms that are set up to carry that work.
SubscribeStar is cheap, and for artists that is its best argument, though the adult side costs twice the general one. SubscribeStar.adult, where NSFW work has to live, lists a platform service fee of 10% for regular content providers; SubscribeStar.com, the safe for work site, lists 5%. Our SubscribeStar review for adult creators works through what that means on a $10 subscription. Payment processing is separate and runs from 3% plus $0.30 to 10% plus $0.40 per charge, depending on the card, the bank and the country, and you can choose to pass that cost on to subscribers instead of covering it yourself. Payout fees depend on the method and your country and are shown after you request a payout.
| What comes out | SubscribeStar | HerFans |
|---|---|---|
| Platform fee | 10% on SubscribeStar.adult (5% on the SFW .com site) | Flat 20% |
| Payment processing | 3% + $0.30 to 10% + $0.40 per charge, or passed on to subscribers | Included in the 20% |
| Reserve | Up to 10% of collected funds (at least $35) held for 30 business days | Each sale pending 30 days, then 10% held to day 120 |
| Payout minimum | $150 on balance (some US accounts $30) | $10 once your identity is verified |
| Time between payouts | At least 10 business days | One pending request at a time, sent within 3 business days |
| Real people in explicit content | No: the adult side is drawn and animated work only | Yes, 18+ with identity and consent records |
Read that table as an artist and SubscribeStar wins on money. Read it as a photo or video creator and the last row settles it before the money matters.
Say 100 fans pay $10 a month. The SubscribeStar column assumes you cover processing yourself, at the lowest and highest rates its pricing page lists.
| $1,000 of subscriptions | SubscribeStar (artists) | OnlyFans | Fansly | HerFans |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Platform cut | 10% plus processing | 20% | 20% | Flat 20% |
| You keep on the month | $760 to $840 | $800 | $800 | $800 |
| You keep if fans pay processing | $900 | Not an option | Not an option | Not an option |
| Explicit content of yourself | Not allowed | Allowed | Allowed | Allowed |
So on the adult site SubscribeStar ends up close to a 20% platform, a little better or a little worse depending on the cards your fans use, and it is the only one that lets you hand processing to fans. Nobody who draws for a living should leave it for us. The comparison that matters for a real adult creator is the other three columns, where the rate is the same 20% and the differences are in payouts, protection and who else is on the platform.
OnlyFans is the default for a reason: the biggest fan base, a flat 20% on everything, and a US bank payout within a few days of a request once earnings clear. What it does not give you is discovery. Almost every subscriber has to come from your own social accounts.
Fansly pays a flat 80%, written into its terms, and has a For You feed and tag search that can surface a new page. Every sale pends for seven days before you can withdraw, minimums start at $20, and an account left alone for 12 months pays $5 a month from its balance. Our sites like Fansly page goes through the rest.
Fanvue pays 85% in your first month and 80% after that, according to its own creator page, with a $20 payout minimum and no PayPal. It is the most open of the four to AI-generated creators, which is either a selling point or the reason to look elsewhere.
HerFans is for women selling their own content. It takes a flat 20% on subscriptions, pay-per-view posts, tips and paid messages, checks every creator with a government ID and a live camera session before she can sell, reviews every file before it goes public, and marks each paid photo and video with the buyer account that bought it. Payouts go on request from $10 to an IBAN or a PayPal account in your own name, within three business days, after a 30 day pending period per sale (10% reserve to day 120). There is no monthly plan and no charge for an idle account.
This is the part of SubscribeStar that artists complain about most, and it is all in the payouts policy, updated August 20, 2026. You need at least $150 on your balance before you can ask for a payout, though some US accounts get a $30 threshold. Ten business days have to pass after your first subscriber pays, and ten more between one payout and the next. Accounts with fewer than five active subscribers sit in an initial risk period, typically up to 90 days. The first payout, or any change of payout method, can add another five business days. Once approved, a payout under $5,000 is sent within up to ten business days.
None of that is unreasonable for a platform carrying card risk, and HerFans holds money too: every sale pends for 30 days, because refunds and most card disputes arrive in that time. The difference is the floor. A new page that earns $120 in its first month can withdraw it on HerFans once it clears, and waits on SubscribeStar until the balance reaches $150.
Yes. It is a real US company, it publishes its fee structure and its payout rules in more detail than most creator platforms. The complaints you will find are about payouts being held and card payments being declined, and its own policy explains both: when more than 12% of payments are declined it may pass the extra costs on to the creator, and a chargeback rate over 0.25% can freeze billing and hold the balance for up to four months. It is also clear that it will not take PayPal. Legit, then, but built for a different creator than the one reading this page.
If you are also weighing Patreon itself, our Patreon alternative page covers its 10% fee and what its guidelines allow, and the guide to Patreon alternatives for adult content puts every option side by side.
What a creator keeps, how payouts work, and who each platform suits. Figures from each company’s own pages in September 2026.
| Platform | Creator keeps | Payouts | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| HerFans | 80% on subscriptions, pay-per-view, tips and paid messages | $10 minimum, on request after a 30 day pending period per sale | Women selling their own content |
| SubscribeStar (baseline) | 90% before processing (adult site) | $150 balance, 10 business days apart | NSFW artists, animators, adult games |
| OnlyFans | 80% | Most methods $20 minimum | The biggest existing fan base |
| Fansly | 80% | $20 minimum, every sale pends 7 days | Discovery through tags and a For You feed |
| Fanvue | 85% in month one, then 80% | $20 minimum, no PayPal | Creators who want AI tools |
| Patreon | 90% before processing | Automatic or on request | Safe-for-work and illustrated adult tiers |
Fees and payout terms are set by each platform and can change. Figures reflect publicly listed terms; check each site for current rates.
A flat 20% on everything, a government ID and live camera check for every creator, every file reviewed before it is public, and each paid file marked with the account that bought it. Payouts from $10 to an IBAN or PayPal after a 30 day pending period. Honest drawback: a newer and smaller fan base than OnlyFans.
Flat 20%, the largest audience, and a well-known brand fans already pay. Almost no discovery inside the platform, so you bring your own subscribers.
80% flat in its terms, tag search and a For You feed. Every sale pends seven days, and an account idle for 12 months pays $5 a month from its balance.
85% in the first month and 80% after, a $20 minimum and a 1% fee only on crypto payouts. The platform most open to AI-generated creators.
10% platform fee for creators who joined after August 2025, plus processing. Adult/18+ pages must keep nudity behind the paywall, and its guidelines draw hard lines on explicit work featuring real people.
10% plus processing on its adult site (5% on the SFW one), and the only platform here that lets you pass processing to fans. Its adult side is for 2D and 3D art only, a $150 payout floor, and no PayPal.
Every creator is checked with a government ID and a live camera session, and anyone else in your content needs consent on file first.
Subscriptions, pay-per-view posts, tips and paid messages all pay the same share, with no monthly plan.
Each paid photo and video carries your link and a mark tied to the account that bought it.
Once a sale clears its 30 day pending period, request it to an IBAN or a PayPal account in your own name; it is sent within three business days.
Sign up in seconds with email, pick a creator name, and set up your profile. No upfront cost.
Upload photos and videos, set a monthly subscription price, and lock premium posts behind pay-per-view.
Fans subscribe, tip and unlock your content. You ask for a payout from your dashboard once your available balance reaches the published minimum. Each sale is pending for 30 days, the period in which refunds and most card disputes arrive, and 10% of it is held as a reserve until day 120. For a sale paid by card, the reserve is held longer, up to day 206, because our card processor keeps its own reserve on that payment for 26 weeks and it is released to you once it has been returned to us.
