Is a Subscription or a Single Unlock Cheaper
Profiles, prices and public posts are open without an account, and the public surface is safe for work. An account is free; you only pay when you unlock something.
Subscribing wins as soon as you want more than one or two things from a creator in a month. At a $9.99 subscription against $6 unlocks the crossover is two items, and it gets more lopsided from there. Unlocking wins in three specific cases: you want exactly one thing, you want to keep it permanently, or she barely posts. Everything else is arithmetic.
Almost nobody does this arithmetic before buying, which is why people end up spending $40 on unlocks from a creator whose whole month costs $10.
The arithmetic
| Items you want this month | Unlocking at $6 each | Subscribing at $9.99 | Cheaper |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $6.00 | $9.99 | Unlock |
| 2 | $12.00 | $9.99 | Subscribe |
| 4 | $24.00 | $9.99 | Subscribe |
| 8 | $48.00 | $9.99 | Subscribe |
The general rule: divide the subscription price by the typical unlock price. That is how many items you need to want before subscribing pays for itself. At $9.99 and $6 unlocks it is 1.7, which rounds to two.
Messaging is the hidden factor
This is the part that changes the answer for a lot of people and almost never appears in the comparison. On HerFans, as on OnlyFans, only subscribers can message a creator. So if you intend to actually talk to her, the subscription is not competing only against unlocks: single unlocks never open her inbox, and the subscription does.
For someone who wants conversation more than content, that alone can justify the subscription regardless of how much she posts. The kinds of paid message are set out in paid DMs explained.
Three cases where unlocking wins anyway
- You want one specific thing. One set, one video, nothing else. Pay for it and leave. This is a completely reasonable way to use a creator platform and nobody should feel obliged to subscribe.
- You want to keep it. This is the important one. An unlocked post is a purchase and stays yours permanently. Subscription access is a rental that ends with the month. If there is something you would be annoyed to lose, unlock it, even while subscribed.
- She barely posts. A subscription to someone who posts twice a month is worse value than two unlocks, and you can see her posting rhythm from her public feed before deciding.
What a subscription does not include
The most common disappointment in this whole category, so it is worth being blunt. A subscription covers her subscriber-only feed, everything she posts while it runs, her live streams and messaging. It does not cover:
- Pay-per-view posts. These are separate purchases even for subscribers, on every platform.
- Priced attachments in messages. Free to receive, priced to unlock.
- Custom orders, on the platforms that offer them. Always separate, because they are work made for you.
- Tips. Always optional and never included in anything.
If someone tells you a subscription is "everything she has", that has never been true anywhere.
The HerFans specifics
Two things worth knowing before you do the arithmetic here.
A subscription paid by card renews every month until you cancel. We email you 3 days before each renewal. Paid any other way, it ends with the month you paid for, and we email you before it ends with a link to renew. The renewal date sits on your subscriptions list, so that list is the thing to check. If you cancel, without contacting anybody, you keep the month you have already paid for running to its end rather than losing access the day you press it.
Everything else is bought once. A paid post, a paid message and a tip are single purchases, and none of them repeats or turns into anything. A trial does not convert into a paid month, because there is nothing here that converts.
Every purchase is paid at the moment you make it, on a secure payment page.
Bundles are the third option: several months at once at a discount, commonly around 10% for three months. Worth it only when you already know you like her work, which usually means after a first month rather than instead of one.
A sensible order of operations
- Follow her free and watch her public posts for a week. Costs nothing, tells you her rhythm.
- Unlock one thing if something specific catches you. Now you know what her paid work looks like.
- Subscribe for a month if you found yourself wanting a second item.
- Consider a bundle only after a full month you enjoyed.
That sequence costs the least and produces the fewest regrets, which is a better goal than optimising any single purchase. More on choosing who to spend it on in how to find creators worth subscribing to.
